F-Secure Hackathon is a 30-hour event starting at 10 AM on 12.4.2013 full of thrills and spills in Bangsar South, KL. It is aiming to bring together 50 talented developers from all over Malaysia to create applications in making Web a safer place to be. The purpose of the hackathon is to give local Malaysian developers a chance to build applications which can utilize data from APIs provided by the company delivering world’s best protection. This event is also the kickoff to F-Secure 25th Anniversary celebrations in APAC region. With the theme "Securing services on the Web" and our brand promise “Protecting the irreplaceable”, we are offering to the developers a wide variety of different APIs that provide information such as network reputation data, virus alert data and malware information – hence offering an excellent venue for talented developers to drive innovation of safe web apps to the next level. What can YOU do with access to URL reputation data, content storage and sharing, real time malware infection location data, and more?
The most outstanding team achievement will be rewarded with a dinner with our CRO, Mikko Hyppönen, who is a world-recognized malware researcher and was, among other appraisals, selected among the 50 most important people on the Web by the PC World magazine and was included in the FP Global 100 Thinkers list (see more: http://mikko.hypponen.com/). We will also have some other more traditional giveaways as well as goodie-bag and servings for the event itself.
The F-Secure Open Hackathon in Kuala Lumpur is over. During 26 hours of active development time, a total number of 13 teams created applications based on the given F-Secure API’s and the overall topic of Web Security. All teams successfully delivered actual working software which is quite an achievement on its own. There were Chrome extensions for displaying site reputation, iPhone safe QR readers, Twitter filtering, malware detection visualizations and much more.
The jury had a difficult task to pick the winners, but eventually recognized the following:

And the two top awards:
